random old stuff

I was looking at random old stuff in my former bedroom in San Diego. Here are a couple gems:

Here is an old army circulation from 1944. Anyone know its significance, if any?

LA CROSSE HEADRON COLLIDER

With the help of cousin Ellie, we ran our own particle experiment. First we tested the beam by running it in one direction. If you watch the end of the clip you will see the Jack particle run in the other direction and collide with other particles, the result was the buxton particle. The Jack particle gave off lots of heat and noise when it moved close to the speed of light. This was shot at a 90 degree offset for your protection.

Busy Week for Branson Bloggers!

Man, I feel bad posting this write-up and kicking so many quality posts down the page, but I figured you'd all want to see my guts :)

Bottom of the container with all the gallstones. Yum!
Artsy, side view!

Innards.

This is Mary, I'm finishing the post for Beth as she is now showing off her belly to her NWS friends that stopped by. Here's the commentary for the above operative photos:

Top left - healthy liver with tip of intact white gallbladder sticking out below, surrounded by normal fat that EVERYONE has.
Top right - Liver lifted up to expose gall bladder, yellow adhesions around edges indicate many previous gall bladder attacks.
Bottom left - They ran a tube through the bile duct to make sure there were no additional stones in it.
Bottom right - Gall bladder after separation from the liver, just sitting on top before they sucked it out.

She's doing great!

Eve of Destruction Video

To allay your fears I forward this video of an eminent scientist debunking the rumors of evil clowns at the center of black holes destroying the earth.

Happy Birthday Tony

Happy birthday to Tony, who is 15 today.

No need for gifts, because he had a pretty good football game tonight. He threw 3 TDs and picked off a pass in the red zone on defense in a 32-22 victory.

Here's a recent picture of the boy after his starring role in High School Musical 2.

Jimmy on Local TV

Some TV time for Jimmy. No "um"s or "like"s out of this guy.

Why is Troll Head Bozo Trying to Destroy the Earth?

Someone please stop him before it's too late!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moEzECvJDas

Some people are worrying about the world's next-generation particle collider, the Large Hadron Collider, which is due to open for business next year at CERN's facility on the Franco-Swiss border. The LHC site says:
"According to some theoretical models, tiny black holes could be produced in collisions at the LHC. They would then very quickly decay into what is known as Hawking radiation (the tinier the black hole, the faster it evaporates) which would be detected by experiments." But some scientists have pointed out that Hawking radiation may not exist as documented in the scientific papers Do black holes radiate? and On the Universality of the Hawking Effect.

Sir Martin Rees says:
"It is not inconceivable that physics could be dangerous too. Some experiments are designed to generate conditions more extreme than ever occur naturally. Nobody then knows exactly what will happen. Indeed, there would be no point in doing any experiments if their outcomes could be fully predicted in advance. Some theorists have conjectured that certain types of experiment could conceivably unleash a runaway process that destroyed not just us but Earth itself." Nick Bostrom says:
"There have been speculations that future high-energy particle accelerator experiments may cause a breakdown of a metastable vacuum state that our part of the cosmos might be in, converting it into a 'true' vacuum of lower energy density. This would result in an expanding bubble of total destruction that would sweep through the galaxy and beyond at the speed of light, tearing all matter apart as it proceeds."

Preschool

I posted this on the Buxton blog, but in case you don't check that out, here it is...
Ellie started preschool today!!! We dropped Jaymeson off at Kimmy's this morning, and when I got back in the car she said, "Just the girls going to school. I'm so excited!!!!!!" Except "excited" was screamed in a super high, drawn out way. It was great.Got some pictures of her on the bench outside of school, as she found her cubby, by the welcome sign, with her teacher, and again as she waved goodbye to me from the waving window.

Managed to hold the tears back until I shut the car door, and lost it.It was one of those moments that made me realize that my baby is growing up, and reminded me that my dad isn't here to share it with us. Bummer. I reached for my phone to call him, but knew he wasn't there. Wanted to call someone, but figured my mom was sleeping in on her day off (she picked Ellie up at school), and that it was 6 a.m. in Idaho. Way too early to call Stephanie.

The tears blended with the raindrops on the windshield and I made it to school, where the kids asked if I had allergies. I told them of my ordeal, and they all said, "Aw."My mom and my grandpa picked Ellie up from school. She came running out yelling, "Great Grandpa!!!!!" The teacher said she had a great day, sent home a calendar, and Ellie got dropped back at Kimmy's. Ellie will be the "Special Helper" on Sept. 23rd. She gets to bring three things to share, and the daily snack. She's pretty pumped, and said it was a great day. What a big girl.
