A new Branson Blogger on the way

Yes thats right, Ella's going to have a little brother or sister. Two kids before our second wedding anniversary, is that weird? Andrea is very eager to go to Graduate School to become a Nurse Practitioner, so we're not wasting any time.

Hope this message finds everyone well, and we hope to see you all soon.

Tom's Birthday Cards -- and Sandy has caught up with us..!

In the form of good news and bad news -- Along with the gifts we each made a birthday card to celebrate Tom's birthday --

Now onto a more dire path.
When I checked my work voicemail I found... a message from Sandy Lewis, wanting to share thoughts and talk about his feelings. Now, I've heard many stories, enough that I don't want to talk to him. You guys know him better & I'd like a bit of advice...
Will it work just to ignore his message? Or will that spur him on to keep wanting to deliver whatever thoughts he has?

Exciting News

Hey All,
Just wanted to let everyone know that Billy and his girlfriend Lindsey got engaged on Friday. They haven't discussed too much in the way of planning, and he doesn't have e-mail, so I figured I would let everyone know.
Hope you are all doing well!

Tom's Medical Information

Hi Everyone,

Below are excerpts from the autopsy and the report we received from Tom's regular doc, who did his physical check up on January 23.

I'm finding that my aversion to legal language is only exceeded by that of medical language. Every organ seems to be 'smooth and glistening'; those words have now a new meaning..

I've included just a bit from the description of Tom's possesions at the time he died. It is so true to him to walk around with kids' gloves etc.. I found another 2 pairs in his backpack, which was on the passenger seat.
We miss him so horribly.

Allright, here it goes..
Love, Susanne.

EXTERNAL EXAMINATION (Partial):
... Hills Bank ATM card, Zurich travel card, AAA card, airline ticket stubs, two children's
"smile face" ID cards (Sara and Eva Branson), multiple receipts and ATM stubs, and 37 dollars
in US currency (20 dollar bill, 10 dollar bill, 5 dollar bill, two singles). Two red child
size gloves are present in the pocket of the black leather jacket and a key ring with ten keys
is in the pants pocket.

CASE SUMMARY:
The cause of death in this case is acute myocardial ischemia due to atherosclerotic coronary
artery disease. Based on the microscopic findings, the most likely mechanism was that of plaque rupture with concomitant occlusion and/or vasospasm of the affected segment of the left
anterior descending coronary artery. Such an acute event can induce severe acute myocardial
ischemia of the left ventricle and interventricular septum, and may also cause fatal dysrhythmia (abnormal contraction of the heart muscle).
There were no other significant contributing factors found at autopsy, and toxicology analysis
of blood, urine, and vitreous showed no evidence of drugs of abuse.

CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM:
The heart weighs 500 grams. The epicardial and pericardial surfaces are smooth and glistening.
The pericardial sac is free of significant fluid or adhesions.
The coronary arteries show a variant take-off of the right main, characterized by early branching of the right mainstem coronary artery, with two ostia present at the take-off from the aortic root. A left dominant pattern of vascularization is present. There is mild atherosclerotic plaque in the right main and left mainstem coronaries, with less than 10% stenosis by plaque.
The left anterior descending artery shows a severe complicated atherosclerotic plaque demonstrating severe occlusion greater than 90% of the luminal cross sectional area. This segment is 1.2 cm in length, and is located 3.5 cm distal to its takeoff from the left mainstem artery. There is no other areas of significant occlusion.
The chambers and valves bear the usual size/position relationship and are morphologically normal.
The endocardial surfaces are smooth and glistening.
The valve ring circumferences are as follows: tricuspid 13.0 cm; pulmonic 7.5 cm; mitral 9.5 cm
and aortic valve 7.9 cm. There is no myxomatous degeneration, and there is minimal atherosclerotic
plaque involving the aortic valve cusps. The valves are free of vegetations.

GENITAL SYSTEM:
The prostate is unremarkable, with an exceptionally possible 1.0 cm cyst-like structure near
the apex.

MICROSCOPIC EXAMINATION:
The microscopic examination confirms the gross pathologic findings. Sections through the diseased portion of the LAD shows >90% occlusion by complicated atherosclerosis, with ruture of the intimal atheromatous cap; fresh blood and scant fibrin is present within the cap. There is evidence of previous cap rupture with an area of organizing fibrin. Sections of the myocardium show no light microscopic changes of ischemia, and no fibrosis is noted.

Relate this to his physical check up on January 23, 2006:

CONCLUSION (Partial):
...
The metabolic panel that includes the blood sugar, liver functions, and kidney function tests was
normal except minimal elevations of sodium, chloride, and calcium. Lab error?? Might recheck these in the next 4-6 weeks.

The PSA test can help in the screening for prostate cancer and is normal at 3.93. This result will
serve as good reference point for future comparisons. For your age, a level of 3.93 would seem
high. Compared to past results: None known. Should have urology review. Call to schedule.

The mix of cholesterols with an HDL ratio of 5.0 falls in the borderline higher risk range. The
total and bad (LDL) levels are elevated with the good or HDL level fair at 47. LDL levels under 100 are felt to be ideal and good or HDL levels over 60 are felt to be protective. One might consider medication to lower cholesterols in patients who have a strong family history of heart disease or other significant risk factors.

Long term, continue to watch the diet and get more regular exercise.

CHOLESTEROL REPORT:

Triglycerides - 157
Cholesterol - 236 H (<200)
HDL Cholesterol - 47 (35-65)
VLDL (Calc) 31 (5-40)
LDL (Calc) 158 H (0-129)
CRF (T. Chol/HDL Chol) - 5.0 (Ratio 0.0 - 5.0)

Good News

Hey All,
Just wanted to let you all know that I have been offered a job teaching fifth grade at Sand Lake Elementary in Holmen. I am super excited about being closer to home and being able to spend more time with Ellie. With my previous position in Black River Falls it was about an hour commute, and that meant leaving home around 6:20 a.m. At Sand Lake the teacher work day starts at 8 a.m. and the student day runs from 8:40 a.m. -3:40 p.m. This will allow me to drop Ellie off at daycare and pick her up!!!! It also means that Josh doesn't have to learn how to put her hair in pony or piggy tails (one of his biggest challenges to date) because I will be here to help get her ready in the a.m. I just found out today, so I haven't yet resigned from my current position, which I am not looking forward to doing, but know it is for the best. Hope this e-mail finds everyone doing well and we hope to see you all very soon!

Susanne and the Kids Are Coming to Visit

Susanne and the kids are coming to visit us in Rochester this coming weekend. They plan to arrive on Friday evening (21st) and head back Sunday evening (23rd).

All you bloggers are invited to come up and join us. You can come any of the days that work for you. We'll try to have an organized gathering (I'll make food) on Saturday afternoon after 2:00.

But again, you're welcome any time during the weekend that you can make it. If anyone wants to stay overnight, we can handle that too. If you have any ideas/suggestions/questions/etc. just post them on the blog.

Hope to see you.

Mike

Getting Married...

We are happy to announce that we (Jon and Heather) got engaged on Sunday! Because calling each one of you individually would take from now until the wedding, we thought that an engagement e-mail (or blog) was in order. We haven't picked a date yet but we are hoping to get married next summer (July 7th-ish). Our parents are thrilled and couldn't be happier for us. I'm a typical Branson and not very photogenic (personal rip), but please look at the attached pictures if you are interested in the ring or seeing how good Jon's taste in jewelry is. We hope that this message finds all of you doing well and enjoying the nice summer weather. Jon is spending his summer working as an intern at Miller Electric and Heather is busy teaching Spanish summer school classes in Appleton. We hope to get a chance to see each of you sometime soon.

Take care and keep in touch!

Jon and Heather

Good news all around

Beth,
That is awesome news! Right up your alley (get it alley, tornado alley, I crack myself up). Karen, good luck with the nursing thing -- I'm sure you'll do awesome. Tell Jeff congrats on the schooling, very exciting.

As for us, nothing new. I interviewed for a third grade job today, but it is still in BRF. I'm not too worried about getting it, as I have a job either way. I've been applying in La Crosse and Onalaska, so a job in either of those districts would obviously be ideal.

Ellie and Josh are doing well. Ellie is back to her old self -- just waiting for a massive tooth explosion. She's been eating like a cow lately and her gums are ready to burst. Josh gets to take some of the good bad kids to a Twins game in a few weeks, so that should be fun. Other than that, same old, same old.

Hopefully you're all keeping the Father's Day invite in mind...

Staying put in Colorado...

Congratulations, Beth! That sounds like a real adventure! I hope you like Topeka, and your new job. Jeff and I have decided to stay put for the time being in Colorado. We are very excited to announce that Jeff was accepted to Colorado State University's Graduate Program in Social Work. He will begin this fall. I have decided to try my hand at nursing, and I am applying to 3 programs: Regis University in Denver, University of Health and Sciences at Boulder, and Laramie at University of Wyoming. So, keep your fingers crossed! We will be moving to Madison and returning to the midwest in June of 2008. Hope everyone else is doing well...Mary, keep us updated. You are often in my thoughts!
Karen
P.S. Sorry about the other posts, I am still learning about blogs.

Bu-Bye WI!

The rumors are true. I'm packing up my overalls, throwing on some ruby slippers and moving to Kansas.

Yes, Kansas.

I've accepted a position at the National Weather Service in Topeka (www.crh.noaa.gov/top). Everything is still in the preliminary stages...but I know that I'm required to move the 30th and 31st of May and begin work the first day of June.

I'm actually very excited. I mean really, how often do meteorologists get placed in tornado alley? And the fact that my car is already covered in hail dents, I have the perfect vehicle to storm chase in.

What more could a girl want? :)

So if you're ever in Kansas, the invitation is extended for all to stop by and visit!

Finally

I appreciate finally being invited to be part of the family, thanks. Actually I was going to ask about it at Easter and it slipped my mind.

As far as an update, we've got a sick Ellie on our hands right now. She threw up about 15 times on Monday, Josh stayed home Tuesday and she was good all day and then let loose again at 4:30, so I stayed home Wed. She was her normal self Wednesday night, crawling around, causing trouble, not going to sleep, so we took her to daycare yesterday. I got there to pick her up and the daycare provider said she was worried. Ellie took a 4 1/2 hour nap, wouldn't eat or drink and hadn't had a wet diaper all day. We ended up in urgent care last night. She tossed her cookies all over the doctor, the med student and me (somehow she always avoids Josh), so they decided oral rehydration would be the next step. We sat there giving her one syringe full of fluids every five minutes. She managed to keep that down, which was great, because the next step was an IV. She slept well last night and Josh said she ate and drank some this morning. My mom is taking care of her today because we are both low on sick days. I have one left and Josh is fresh out, so we're using all possible resources.

Hopefully all of you are doing well. I did check out the link that Susanne sent. I also read somewhere about a site called legacy.com (I think) where you can post memories and comments and things like that about family members you have lost. Haven't had a chance to look into it with all the cleaning up of vomit, but it might be a nice thing to look at.

Have a great weekend!!!!

If anyone is interested, this link contains some photos of hail from the hailstorm that totalled Beth's car last week. Beth created the hail map at work the next day. http://www.crh.noaa.gov/mkx/?n=041306_hail

Information from Susanne

Most of you probably got this directly from Susanne, but I thought I'd post it for the others.

The math community is gearing up for conferences, programs andpublications in Tom's honor.Tom was the main organizer of the Midwest Geometry Conference & it willbe held in Iowa City, May 18-20, 2007. A colleague from the Universityof Iowa, Palle Jorgensen, has taken over and a lot of Tom's friends hereare helping everywhere they can.I've volunteered as the web master, since I don't know the first thingabout math (though, I could rattle off the topic lines even in mysleep). You'll find lots of stuff at http://www.math.uiowa.edu/MGC2007 and it isbeing updated continually.I took the liberty of adding pictures of each of the Branson siblings onthe 'family' page. They were taken while you guys were helping out theweek following. Should you wish to have your picture replaced by onebetter taken - really, I think you all look fine - just send it to me &I'll get it done. The 'speaker' page indicates representation from everywhere in theworld, and we're already now getting emails from national (Stanford, this morning) & international (France, later in the day) mathematicians, saying that they are close friends of Tom & they want to speak also...

Hello from Vegas

Hope this message finds everyone well. We are in Las Vegas as of yesterday, at Mandalay Bay. I have a software conference starting on Sunday. Did my first poker tournament and finished 18th out of 60, they pay seven places, go figure. Been covering our losses by betting on the Brewers, it's a sure thing every night. I got to go put $10 down on Fred Couples, he's in 2nd after 2 rounds and they're still giving 15 to 1. Mike thanks for the oil link, we are counting on some white collar crime in our future. Mary Woo, good luck with your challenge. See you all soon.

Swimmin' Pools, Movie Stars

Hey!

Here's the info on the land in North Dakota for those of you who want to look at things online.

The website is http://www.oilgas.nd.gov/

Hopefully, you can figure out how to use the site to see what you want. I have used the Well Search and the GIS Map Server the most.

Here are the locations of interest:
- Township 145, Section 10, Range 97
- Township 145, Section 6, Range 96

It is interesting not only to look at the specific locations, but also to look at the area around them. For example, you can put in only a township in the Well Search and see a listing of all the wells in that area. Or you can use the GIS Map Server to go to a location, zoom out and see what's around it.

Mike is Leaving the Country

No, I'm not off to establish the Branson compound in Costa Rica (yet). I'm headed out with the family for our cruise. The cell phones won't be working pretty much Sunday thru Sunday.

We're driving to Galveston Friday night and Saturday, and getting on the boat on Sunday.

Happy Birthday to Ellie. We will miss her party due to the trip.
